v7.8.7 - The very last & most amazing update there will ever be!
With our latest update to v7.8.7, we’re now wrapping things up, as this will be the last update to Flying before we will start to close up shop and go out of business. Read here why this is happening and what will happen to your data. Many thanks to our families, friends, fans and co-pilots during our journey!
From now on, you will no longer be able to add new flights as we need to shut down our Data API. Unfortunately, flight-updates will also no longer be supported.
This is all very sad, but hey, we have some final first-class features for you within our very, very last release to land this plane with some jet-set style:
New Distance Pack
We added new interactive animations to the Leaderboard, and then moved the Leaderboard from the “Stream” to the “Lounge” section to combine it with the “Distance to the Moon” visualization as a pack. We also added a map to this pack. With all your flights plotted in semi-transparent paths, you can now visualize how far you’ve made it globally. The darker the path, the more you have flown this route!
Test Pilot Stamp!
We are giving away a very last stamp to say thank you to all our users for using Flying in the last months. Flying with you has been a blast, we have received so much great and helpful feedback from all of you!! :-)
For us, this startup-flight with Flying has been an amazing experience over the last 2 years. We had big dreams, worked hard and had a lot of fun in the process. Therefore, we have named this last update “Dreamliner.” Keep flying and never stop dreaming about a better air travel experience!
As we drink a glass of Vodka-Champagne, we now say cheers, good-bye & good Luck!
The Flying App Team
Past flights & Web-check-in for US flights with new update!
With our latest update to v1.4.3, we’re now excited to include the beta-release of two new features. See what we’ve cooked up in our development-laboratories and help us with your feedback to make these features bullet-proof:
Past Flights (beta)
Out of all the feedback we’ve received since our launch 6 months ago, the most requested feature was the ability to add your past flights. We worked very hard the last couple of months to make that more of a reality. We already launched support for Tripit, Worldmate & Flightdiary in previous releases to allow the import of past flights from these services. And today we are happy to make adding past flights possible within Flying when adding a flight.
As a first step, we now allow adding older flights taken place since June 1st, 2013. We are working together with our data-provider to go back even further with this feature as soon as possible! So, in case you came onboard to the Flying app late last year, grab your past boarding-passes from 2013 and add these flights in order get stamps and see them in your data visualizations.
Web-check-in for US flights (beta)
It’s often a hassle to remind yourself to check-in to your booked flights right away to get the best seats once check-in has opened. And searching through your mail inbox for the booking-number can be a hassle. We tackled this issue with the release of a new check-in beta feature:
-> all users with upcoming flights will get an auto-notification 24 hours in advance (once your flight is ready for check-in).
Our app will already have copied your booking code from the boarding pass, so from here, users can jump directly into the airline’s web-checkin-website without leaving the Flying app.
We believe that this process will make it much faster & more convenient to deal with checking-in to your flights on different airlines. For this first beta version, we support all domestic US flights from the following airlines: United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, US Airways, Virgin America, JetBlue Airways, Alaska Airlines. More airlines to come! This feature comes right out of our Flying-labs, we’re looking forward to hearing your feedback to improve and expand this feature in the future. We love collaborating with our users, if you would like to be a part of our offical test pilot group for this feature or for future features, let us know!
As always, for this latest version we also worked on improving the performance of the app and added some smaller updates here and there:
- There is now a shortcut to jump directly to your own profile, simply tap the ‘Total Miles-Counter’ in the main Cockpit!
- To easily access/copy your booking code, we’ve added a new “Copy” button next to booking code in boarding pass
- Improved push notifications
- “Notes” text area in boarding pass is now selectable/copyable
- New in app browser is in use for: flightright intro, flightright claim flight, profile-ARKTIK, registration screen, settings/about/flyingfrom.to
- Bug fixes, and performance enhancement!
Please download/update to the newest version and Keep Flying!
Importing with WorldMate and Flightdiary
Our latest v1.4 now offers the option to import future and past flights by forwarding flight confirmation emails to firstname.lastname@example.org with the help of WorldMate. We also now cater to Flightdiary users by allowing them to forward exported .csv files to email@example.com. Both of these new options are easy to do! Please be aware that we are still in a beta testing phase with this new feature, some turbulences may occur along the way. We have set up a mini tutorial with tips to help you with each option:
Forwarding Confirmation Emails
Just booked a flight online, but don’t want the hassle of typing it into the Flying app manually? Have old flights that you would love to have in your flight history inside the Flying app? Simply forward your flight confirmation emails to firstname.lastname@example.org It’s that simple! You will receive a cockpit notification, as well as a confirmation email after a successful import.
***note: please forward your flight confirmation emails using the same email address you have registered with the Flying app! Otherwise, we cannot match these flights to your account!
Having troubles? There are a few possibilities for failure. Sometimes we can’t match your forwarded data 100% to the flights in our database, or sometimes important details are missing in order to ensure a correct import.
We do our best, however, certain airlines have an email format that we cannot easily read to retrieve your flight information. Please make sure that you have forwarded the correct flight confirmation email for your flight(s), and that you have not already added these flights to the app.
If a specific flight is giving you trouble, it’s probably best to add it manually by tapping the “+” sign in the cockpit. We understand that this might not help in the case that it is a past flight, so feel free to email our support team with recurring issues: email@example.com
We are happy to provide flightdiary users a way to import their flights from flightdiary.net to the Flying app. Simply login to flightdiary.net, head to the “Settings” section, and find the “Export” tab. Here you can download a “.csv” file of all your flightdiary flights.
All you will need to do next, is send a blank email with this .csv file attached to firstname.lastname@example.org.
***note: please send your email using the email address you have registered with the Flying app! Otherwise, we cannot match these flights to your account!
Having troubles? It is possible that your email did not contain a .csv attachment. Please try again and first check to make sure you have attached the document, that it is also in a .csv format, and that the file has not been altered from the original export from Flightdiary.
There could be a few other different reasons for failure. Perhaps you have already imported these flights. Or in other cases we can’t match your provided data 100% to the flights in our database, or sometimes important details are missing in order to ensure a correct import. If you feel that information could be missing, please fix the missing information on Flightdiary.net, re-export and submit these flights that failed again (be sure to add the date, flight number, departure airport, arrival airport, departure time, and arrival time).
Feel free to email our support team with recurring issues: email@example.com
-The Flying Crew
Our latest Version 1.4 has taken flight! We’re happy to announce we’ve reworked your profile view, added paths to your flight’s map, and added a few other optimizations!
- We’ve reworked your profile view. Your friends on Flying can now see your next 3 upcoming flights as well as your past 3 flights.
We all love flying up in the sky, but we also have to face the consequences of it. We are very proud to announce that we now integrated a CO2 calculation with our recent partnership with ARKTIK, a trustful provider for offsetting your carbon footprint. As a start, you can see your CO2 output per flight in the boarding-pass and your total in the profile view. This is our first step together with ARKTIK, more exciting features centered around CO2 to come in 2014!
- We gave a facelift to your flight’s map by adding geodesic lines from departure to arrival airport (iOS 7).
- Also, “Find Friends” in the “Settings” section now includes a search for XING users!
- Other smaller bug fixes as well as speed improvement!
Enjoy! Help us smooth out turbulences by sending your bugs and issues to firstname.lastname@example.org.

Start sharing! The contest will end October 31st. You can check out these updated rules here.
Major App Update & Flightright integration
Ladies and Gentlemen, fasten your seat belts for our latest major release!
We are very proud to announce a major next step for The Flying App with the release of v1.3. With this update you will from now on be notified if you have the right to claim money from airlines for flight delays and cancellations. To accomplish this we partnered up with Flightright - a leading provider of easy flight compensation calculation.
Our “Flightright” tool in the “Lounge” section sends you a notification when you have a possible claim against an airline. We partnered with Flightright and now make it easy for you to monitor your airline rights. Under a new EU law, you may be entitled to a claim against an airline in case of a delay of more than 3h or in case of a canceled flight. You can get up to 600 Euros for canceled flights, risk free. Your flight has to land or depart from a European airport, or be operated by a European carrier. We also provide a short video in order to further explain this feature.
We further improved the way you can share your flights with your friends, family & colleagues. New with 1.3. is the possibility to also share the stamps you have achieved.
The Web-Flight-Info (web boarding pass) is now displaying stamps related to this flight.
We also added support for XING sharing. This way XING users can also share their upcoming or past flights and stamps with their business network.
Our Dev-Team worked very hard the last weeks to optimize Flying for the new iOS7 release. You will notice a lot of little tweaks here and there, more optimization to come!
What else is new:
- Rate Flying from within “Settings/About”
- We also include the option to store your booking code in the “Add Flight” section when you add your next flights.
- Speed & UX improvements for the “Stream” area
- General bug-fixing & optimization

Tips for using TripIt with Flying
It’s exciting for us to say that after our TripIt integration, we now have more flights imported into our database via TripIt than by entering them manually. We are happy to provide you with an easier, more seamless way to add your flights. Here are some tips on using TripIt with Flying:
1. Connecting with TripIt
Don’t have a TripIt account yet, but want to try it out? Visit TripIt.com to create one first, it’s free.
Have an existing TripIt account? Go to “Settings" > "Sync with TripIt.”
After you tap the “Connect with TripIt" button, you will be prompted to enter your TripIt account email and password. You don’t need to create a separate account here, simply enter your existing account details and tap "Sign Up" to start the syncing process.
2. Syncing—-The waiting game.
Once you have connected to your TripIt account, the syncing process will start immediately. You will receive a cockpit notification when the sync has completed. Importing all your flight data from TripIt is a complex processes, and it could take a little while, so sit back and relax. The captain will make sure the syncing process goes smoothly.
3. Don’t see your imported flights?
Does your cockpit notification tell you that “x amount” of flights have been added from TripIt, but you don’t see them in your “Flights” section? You might just need to refresh this section of the app. Go to your “Flights" section and pull down to refresh this page:
4. Missing Flights
The captain will do his best to make sure to avoid turbulences during the sync process, however, there may be a few flights that will give us trouble while importing from TripIt. If your first sync has missed some flights, sometimes it’s best to try to sync a second time.
Not all flights will be imported right away. In some cases during the sync, a flight received from TripIt may be missing a few vital details. This happens especially when entering past flights into TripIt that were from long ago. In this case, our crew will do some manual checks to fill in the missing data and add these flights to your account a little later.
6. Experiencing some extra turbulences with importing flights?
Have a flight that still won’t import from TripIt? Just sent the flight route (flight number and date) via email to firstname.lastname@example.org
We will add the route by hand.
